Analysis of Cool Hand Luke
This story is set in the mid 1900's and takes place in the humid state of Florida. It took place during the time of integration of blacks and whites. The political and social environment is one of tension and strict authoritative individuals who want nothing more than to prove themselves.
We find a young man named Luke cutting the heads off of parking meters, this is where the story begins. The action starts to heat up when Luke is sent to road prison 36 and meets the chain gang that is located there. He starts off in a bad way by angering the head inmate, Dragline. The emotional climax in this film is when Luke is running from the bosses for the second time and has the truck. For the falling action it is when Dragline and Luke are talking about going back to the prison camp while inside the church. After this scene Luke goes to the door and is shot by Boss Godfrey, this is the beginning of the end. For the final part of the film Dragline becomes the main focus because Luke has ended and this leaves us with a closed ending.
There were very little bits of evidence for a time lapse but there were a few examples. One of these would be after Luke is arrested, you don't see the trial or trip to the camp. Another would be when Luke runs for the first time and then is brought back, we don't see him get arrested or taken back, he just comes back beaten.
Many conflicts arise in this story but only a few need to be explained. The first would a person versus society conflict where in the beginning of the story when Luke is arrested he states his reasoning for the destruction of public property to be him getting payback. His background states that he was in the military but was demoted many times, this could be a reason for the parking meters. Person versus nature is brought up with Luke and the snake as well as when the chain gang gets rained on. A form of person versus fate could be that Luke was meant to die from the beginning in order to change the lives of the other inmates.
Metaphors were scarce in this story but one was found to be an important one for discussion. When Luke says "Deader than hell but won't let go," he references to himself later in the film with him not giving up even though he was certain to die. The turtle represents Luke in an amazing way by showing early on in the story what might happen in the end.
