synopsis
Good versus Evil seems to be a reoccurring theme no matter what the story may be. The movie, Cool Hand Luke, plays out this scenario exquisitely. Luke, a run down war-hero, gets in trouble for cutting the heads off of parking meters and finds himself facing a two year sentence in a southern prison camp during the 1930's. When he arrives, Luke is clearly the light amongst the darkness. He brings entertainment and hope to the seemingly awful facility in a chaotic way. The men find Luke's antics appealing in the sense that he refuses to conform to the rules of society. Throughout this story Luke is continuously faced with problems and deals with them how he sees fit. Luke is unbreakable and an inspiration, according to the men, and they see him as a form of God-figure. The men running the facility do not think the same thing. They are considered to be the evil that challenges Luke, who is seen as the good. Unlike most good versus evil stories, this one is backwards because evil defeats the good.
