Characters:
Luke: A nonconformist war hero. The main character, goes to prison for knocking down parking meters. Tries to escape three times and was killed on the final escape in a church. He is like a Christ like figure to the prisoners. He had a two year sentence but didn't what to serve the time. (Paul Newman) Dragline: Luke's best friend. Before Luke arrived he was the main man and center of attention and nobody messed with him. Escaped with Luke on Luke's final escape. Tried to convince Luke to turn himself in while in the church. Could not read or write. From the south lived on a farm. (George Kennedy) Society Red: Placed a bet with Dragline and Luke saying that Luke could not eat over 20 eggs. Very educated probably from the North.(J.D. Cannon) Koko: When Luke was fetching the water koko was the guy who flicked the cigarette at him. Showed Luke the magazine when Luke was brought back after escaping the second time. (Lou Antonio) Loudmouth Steve: He arrived to jail with Luke. He is the one who asked how long it would take to eat fifty eggs. He also yells that you cant change the rules with the egg issue. Loudmouth Steve talks about the girls in the magazine. (Robert Drivas) Captain: The man with the annoying voice. Famous quote " What we've got here is a failure to communicate." In charge of the prison road. Said he was going to take Luke to the hospital after being shot but instead took him to the prison hospital an hour away causing him to die. (Strother Martin) Arletta: Lukes mother who comes and visits him in the back of the truck before she goes back home and dies of Lung Cancer. Luke shows emotion toward his mom which is not seen much in the movie or story. She regrets not loving him enough. (Jo Van Fleet) Carr: Security guard. Only authoritative when he needs to be. Seems to be nicer to the inmates than the other guards. Falls into Dragline and Lukes plan when Luke escapes. (Clifton James) Boss Godfrey: The meanest of all the guards. He watches over the inmates while they are out working. Wears the sunglasses and never talks to anyone.(Morgan Woodward) Boss Paul: Boss Paul is the one who told Luke to takes his dirt out of Boss Kean's ditch. He is the one who is trying to brake Luke. He tries to get into Luke's head. (Luke Askew) Rabbitt: Is the character who is slave to Boss Godfrey, for instance fetching him his gun and also he gets the water and plates the food for the prisoners. (Marc Cavell ) Blind Dick: Is one of the gambler for a poker game. Blind Dick is also known as a rapist they called him "The Shiek of Simmonsville." Blind and Chief act out the description of the book (Richard Davalos) Boss Shorty: When Luke finished digging out all the dirt out of Boss Kean's ditch Boss Shorty told him to get his dirt out of his yard. He also hits Luke when he digging with a hoe handle. He was one of the Pursuer to find Luke when he escaped.(Robert Donner) Tattoo: He tries to escape with Luke for the first time when Dragline distracts Carr. He tried to buy work to work in the ditch in the beginning, but didn't get the job. When Luke is caught for the second time Tattoo was the one the second one who talked about the magazine Luke was in (Warren Finnerty) Babalugats: Babaluagts is the one who seems to be special(mental) in the movie.
